Thanks! I bake out an AO map from the sculpt (or the low poly, if I don't make a sculpt) and use it for the base of my Diffuse. :) I hope that helps!

Yes :) When I do sculpts for game-ready models I'll create a basemesh first then work it into a high poly sculpt in zbrush and then retopo. Sometimes I don't create a high poly though, and just texture on the low poly model.

You don't need school (I failed after a semester!) All the resources you need are online.

I don't really start with one part, but block out everything in low poly. Kinda like how you can start a drawing with a rough sketch of the shapes, then refine them. I hope that makes sense =P

Hey,

I wanna say I appreciate the artwork that everyone at riot produces and its all spectacular. I was up at GDC this year and got to meet a bunch of the team, however I was too consumed with getting portfolio reviews and didnt get to ask about the specs of character and environments. so if you are able to answer these next questions I would greatly appreciate it, because I am going to be working on some portfolio pieces and wanted to do a few characters along this style and guidelines.

first, What kinds of poly limits if any are you restricted to for the game models of the character? if no poly limits then file size limits?

second I know for competative games the amount of draw calls to the screen is really important for efficiency, so how many draw calls per object are you limited to? (ie mesh call, diffuse call, normal call, etc etc)

third what got you into this industry?

Hey, thanks!

The only limits we have for the character models are the texture sizes (512x) with some exceptions for larger characters. We try to keep things below 10k tris if possible, but since there's only 10 characters max on the screen at a time, we don't need to worry much about polycounts.

If by draw calls you're referring to readability, then we always apply top down lighting to our characters. There isn't any or much lighting in our engine, so we have to texture in lighting on our own. We also add a pass of saturation, with that usually going top (most saturated) to bottom (least saturated) with the most important parts of the character highlighted the most with lighting and saturation (i.e. the head, shoulders, etc) so that characters are instantly recognizable.

by draw calls i meant how many maps are applied to each individual object but from your answer im just guesing there is a very highly painted diffuse with some lighting tricks applied to it to fake some normal map depth without having a normal map.
